Google Workspace Add-on

Use Brightwave's AI agents directly inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

The Brightwave Google Workspace Add-on brings AI-powered research and editing into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Chat with Brightwave in a sidebar next to your active file, and the agent can read the document you are working on and make approved edits directly.

The Google Workspace Add-on is currently in research preview. It is not generally available yet, and there is no public install link.

Getting started

The add-on is available to research preview participants only. If your team has access, Brightwave will provide the installation path directly or work with your Google Workspace administrator to deploy it for your organization.

Once installed, open the Brightwave sidebar from Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, then sign in with your Brightwave account.

The add-on requires a Brightwave account, a Google Workspace account, preview access, and an active internet connection.

How it works

The add-on opens a Brightwave chat panel inside your Google Workspace editor. When you send a message, Brightwave's agent can use your active file as context and execute edits through Google Workspace APIs. Changes appear in the document as the agent works.

Ask the agent to revise a memo in Docs, analyze or format data in Sheets, or build out a presentation in Slides. The agent also has context from your Brightwave project's data room, so it can pull research findings into the Workspace file you are editing.

Tool approvals

Before the agent makes changes to your file, the add-on asks for your approval. Each edit action shows a confirmation prompt where you can:

  • Allow once — approve the specific edit and let the agent continue
  • Always allow — skip future approval prompts for that type of non-destructive action within the current project and Google Workspace app

If you deny an action, the agent is notified and can suggest an alternative approach. You can manage your always-allow preferences in the add-on settings.

Google Sheets

The agent can read and write to your spreadsheets:

  • Read and inspect — read cell values and formulas, inspect range metadata, list sheets, and detect used regions automatically
  • Write and append — write values and formulas to ranges, append rows to existing data, and clear ranges
  • Copy — copy cell values, formulas, and formatting between ranges
  • Sheets — create, rename, duplicate, and delete worksheets
  • Tables, charts, and pivots — create tables, charts, combo charts, and pivot tables; update charts; and format chart axes
  • Named ranges — create and manage named ranges for structured references
  • Formatting — format cell ranges, merge or unmerge ranges, set number formats, change fills, fonts, borders, alignment, and column widths
  • Rules and cleanup — apply conditional formatting, set data validation, sort and filter ranges, and remove duplicate rows

Google Docs

The agent can draft and edit Google Docs:

  • Read and navigate — read full document content and structure, find text, and inspect the current selection
  • Write content — insert text and headings, replace paragraphs, and find-and-replace across the document
  • Images — insert images into documents
  • Tables — insert, format, and update tables with structured data
  • Lists — format and structure bulleted and numbered lists
  • Formatting — apply paragraph formatting and update document styles
  • Headers and footers — add, replace, or clear header and footer text
  • Table of contents — create a table of contents from document headings
  • Structure — insert page breaks and manage bookmarks

Google Slides

The agent can build and edit presentations:

  • Slides — create, duplicate, reorder, move, and delete slides
  • Content — edit titles, text boxes, add images and charts, and find-and-replace text across slides
  • Text search — find text across slides and shapes to target edits precisely
  • Speaker notes — add or update speaker notes on slides where the Google runtime supports notes access
  • Shapes — insert and format shapes, group shapes, draw lines, and add native tables
  • Backgrounds — set solid slide backgrounds or reset backgrounds to the default
  • Layout — move, resize, and format slide elements
  • Batch edits — execute multiple changes in a single operation for complex slide updates

Research preview expectations

Because the add-on is in research preview, some operations may behave differently across Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides depending on Google Workspace API support, document state, account permissions, and administrator policies.

Some Office-parity tools are exposed so the agent can reason consistently across Microsoft and Google files, but the Google Workspace client may report specific actions as unsupported. Known preview limitations include Google Docs comments, dynamic page numbers, footnotes, suggestion-mode toggles, updating an existing Docs table of contents, applying Word theme names, changing an existing Slides layout, and picture slide backgrounds.

Review important edits before using the final file externally. The preview is intended to help us refine permissions, approval behavior, host-app compatibility, and parity with the Microsoft Add-in.
